How Many Screenshots Should Employee Monitoring Take?

Every 5-15 minutes is standard. The right frequency depends on the role, oversight need, and legal proportionality.

Screenshot Frequency Guide

Every 5 minutesCustomer service, data entry, compliance-sensitive roles, QA monitoringHigh — justified for customer-facing or regulated work
Every 10 minutesMost knowledge worker teams — the balanced defaultStandard — most appropriate for general remote teams
Every 15 minutesAutonomous professional roles (senior developers, designers, strategic roles)Light — respects autonomy while maintaining oversight

GDPR and Proportionality

Under GDPR, monitoring must be no more intrusive than necessary for the stated purpose. A screenshot every minute would be very difficult to justify as proportionate for most knowledge work roles. Every 10-15 minutes, combined with Smart Blur and Privacy Mode, is generally considered proportionate and GDPR-defensible.
