Productivity Score

A calculated metric estimating how productively an employee uses work time. A useful trend indicator — not an absolute measure of output quality.

Definition

A productivity score is a calculated metric that estimates how productively an employee is using their work time, based on signals like active vs. idle time ratio, categorised application usage (productive tools vs. distracting sites), and task completion data where available.

Productivity scores are useful as relative trend indicators — a sudden drop for a usually high-performing employee may signal a problem — but should not be used as absolute measures of output quality, which requires domain-specific human judgment.

How a Productivity Score Is Calculated

TheDeskMonitor's productivity score is derived from:

  • Activity ratio — active computer time ÷ total session time (40% weight)
  • Productive app usage — time in apps categorised as "productive" ÷ total active time (40% weight)
  • Task completion — tasks completed vs tasks due (20% weight, when task data is available)

Limits of Productivity Scores

A productivity score measures computer-based work activity — not the quality, creativity, or business value of what was produced. A software architect planning a complex system design may score "low" while producing the highest-value work of their week. A data entry operator may score "high" while doing repetitive, low-value work. Always combine productivity score trends with output-quality context before making management decisions.
