Employee Monitoring Glossary
Zone Compliance
A monitoring configuration model that applies per-region privacy rules automatically — so EU employees get GDPR-compliant settings without manual configuration.
Definition
Zone Compliance is a monitoring configuration model that defines geographic or organisational zones — each with its own rules about which monitoring features are enabled, what data is collected, and how long it is retained. For example, a zone covering EU-based employees might disable certain data-intensive features and enforce 30-day retention limits to satisfy GDPR requirements, while a zone covering a client-billing team in a non-EU jurisdiction might enable more comprehensive screenshot logging. Zone Compliance allows a single employer to operate legally across multiple regulatory environments from one platform.
What Zone Compliance Controls
- Which monitoring features are active (screenshots, activity, keystrokes) per zone
- Data retention period enforced per zone (e.g. 30 days for EU, 90 days elsewhere)
- Whether employees are notified of monitoring in real time
- Which categories of data (personal, biometric, location) are excluded from collection
- Granularity of captured data (blur level, sampling frequency)
Why Zone Compliance Matters for GDPR
GDPR's data minimisation and purpose limitation principles require employers to collect only the personal data that is strictly necessary for a stated legitimate purpose — and to delete it once that purpose is fulfilled. Applying uniform monitoring settings to a global workforce risks over-collecting data from EU employees. Zone Compliance enforces the correct settings per jurisdiction automatically, reducing the legal risk of unintentional GDPR non-compliance when onboarding employees across multiple countries.
